RESTORING YOUR CUSHIONS
Maybe you're happy with the fabric on your chair, but the seat cushion has lost some of its oomph. You can have the old padding replaced with something firmer by the Stanley Foam Co., Wallington (stanleyfoam.com).
The company, a wholesale distributer of foam rubber and upholstery supplies, provides about 6o percent of the upholsterers in New Jersey with foam, Dacron, tools and adhesives, said owner Burt Alkes. The company also handles smaller "cushion restoration" jobs.
"Customers bring us their cushions and we take out the old foam," he explained. "We cut new foam and wrap it in Dacron so it has a nice, cushy feel. Then we reinsert it back into the cover, which isn't and easy task if you don't know what you're doing. If customers want something re-upholstered, we'll put them in touch with an upholsterer in their general vicinity."
Alkes explained there are different qualities of foam. He stocks 1.8 Nimbus foam, which he calls "an excellent, high-quality foam," that comes in five different degrees of firmness.
Alkes said the 2.6 Nimbus costs about 30 percent more than the 1.8. Foams are sold in their raw state in various sizes, and the prices vary based on thickness and firmness.
